Cat and Dog Drinking habits
Does it ever surprise you when your dog drinks from puddles, toilets, ponds, yet if their water bowl contains so much as a speck of dirt they will refuse to drink from it?
This is all before we have even considered cats (not all cats, I admit) who will turn up their nose if their water is too warm, too cold, unfiltered, no fresh enough, too fresh, not served in a golden bowl…. the list goes on.
Like humans, animals are 80% water and therefore need to keep hydrated in order to remain healthy. A good general guideline is that a healthy dog should drink between ½ and 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight each day To put this in to context, a healthy 65-pound Retriever should be drinking between about 33 and 65 fluid ounces a day of water daily (roughly 1-2 liters). Likewise, a cat daily water requirement ranges from 5 to 10 fluid ounces (150-300ml)
So, how do we know if our pets are drinking enough and what can we do to make sure they have an ample supply?
We recently conducted a survey and asked 69 pet owners about their pets drinking habits. Amazingly, 59% answered that their pet drunk over a litre a day! Of course this varies for a number of reasons including diet, age, activity level and amount of water actually available.
As I’m sure most pet owners have noticed, most conventional water bowls only hold a fraction of the needed water volume, so we are refilling our pet’s bowls several times a day. In fact, 91% of pet owners asked said they had to change their pets water twice a day and 44% once a day. This is not just down to the amount your pet drinks but also other factors including evaporation, contaminates and spills.
The dreading kicking of the water bowl, leaving you with wet socks is a frustration most pet owners will sympathise with. Well, you aren’t alone. 72% of pet owners asked experienced spills, either self-inflicted or spilt by the pet, on a regular basis.
