Be:Loved – May

By Toast / Blog / No Comments / May 23, 2022

Can dogs get sunburn too?

We all know human skin needs UV protection, but can dogs get burnt too? The answer is YES. A fur coat does not automatically offer sun protection for pets.

Too much fun in the sun can damage dog skin and increase the risk of our four-legged friends developing skin cancer – just as it does for us. Dogs with white fur or thinner coats may be more at risk for sunburn than others, and breeds with light-pigmented noses and eyelids are extra susceptible to sun damage.

Some of the more common breeds that may be particularly at risk include Collies, Australian Sheepdogs, Dalmatians, Bulldogs and Whippets.

Doggie sunburn can also exacerbate any existing skin conditions, such as dermatitis, so if your dog’s a sensitive type, a skin soothing SPF could be a valuable piece of pet care kit this summer season.

Protect your pup on sunny days with Be:Sunsafe

Prevention is better than cure, so try and keep your pup out of the midday sun. And if you are going to be out and about, make sure they always have access to shade and plenty of water to help them stay cool and hydrated.

Apply Be:Sunsafe SPF15 balm to exposed areas of skin – noses and ear tips are particularly at risk, as are pink tummies (if your pup likes to lounge around upside down!) Make sure you reapply regularly too, particularly if your dog is a keen swimmer.

Because human sunscreens may contain ingredients that are toxic to canines – Zinc Oxide for example – Be:Sunsafe has been lovingly formulated with naturally nourishing ingredients that are 100% safe for your pet. These include Vitamin A, E & F, Beeswax, Grapeseed Oil, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Citronella, Chamomile, Lavender, Carrot Seed and Raspberry Seed Oil.

Each recyclable tin of our handmade balm had been made with sensitive skin in mind and is ALWAYS tested on humans. Like every pampering product in our Be:Loved collection, it’s kind and gentle enough to be shared from palm to paw.

With your precious pet protected it’s time to head out and enjoy the sunshine safely (fingers and paws crossed we have lots of it this summer!)
